Lazio at Vinitaly with 53 companies. The sector is worth 6.6% of the agricultural sector

«I am proud of the Lazio Region pavilion at Vinitaly in Verona and of the 53 companies that will ideally represent over 400 producers from our territory. Wine has embodied our culture and our roots for millennia and today it is one of the best ambassadors of the excellence of our Region.” Thus the president of the Lazio Region Francesco Rocca who spoke at the presentation, at the Rome Chamber of Commerce, of the 56th edition of Vinitaly, scheduled at Veronafiere from 14 to 17 April. For Lorenzo Tagliavantipresident of the Rome Chamber of Commerce, wine is «an important opportunity for local development, also for internal areas».

Lazio at Vinitaly

The presence of the Lazio Region at Vinitaly, in collaboration with Arsial, is part of a new valorisation strategy, the ‘Lazio Model’, aimed at promoting the image of Lazio as a region of wine excellence. At the great wine event, a key event in the sector, Lazio presents itself with a collective composed of 53 wineries of the territory, a scenographic pavilion, a new territorial storytelling, a high-level animation program and numerous visibility and business opportunities for its producers. The slogan chosen for the occasion, which accompanies all the major wine events in which Lazio takes part, is “Lazio. All roads lead to taste”, inspired by an ancient motto, is an invitation to discovery, suggesting that every journey undertaken in our region leads the visitor to experience extraordinary experiences, including wine-related ones.

The sector in Lazio

According to the data ARCIAL (Regional Agency for the Development and Innovation of Agriculture of Lazio) the “Vigneto Lazio” bases its appeal on a notable oenological heritage, which boasts 3 DOCG, 27 DOC, 6 IGT and 37 native vines, into which it pours the activity of a supply chain that has 18,000 hectares of vineyard area, 450 active cellars and an annual production of 800,000 hectolitres, with a strong prevalence of whites (75% of the product) over reds (25%). A supply chain capable of generating over 230 million per year in production value, 67 of which from DO/IG denominations alone and an export which in just a few years (from 2020 to 2022) has recorded a growth of 25%, net of a decline in 2023, due to economic aspects that are affecting the entire sector. According to data from the Rome Chamber of Commerce, the Lazio wine sector involves all the provinces of the region, with 49% of the surface cultivated with vines in the province of Rome; 150 million euros (equal to 6.6% of the regional agriculture sector and 3% of the national wine sector) the value of production average over the last 3 years; 19 thousand wine-growing companies; around a hundred small wineries (under 20 hectares).

The productions

Lazio’s productions stand at the highest national quality levels, with 37 recognized denominations. The wine supply chain in the province of Rome represents just under 60% of the entire regional sector with 18 DOC, 2 DOCG and 2 IGT. The wines of Lazio have obtained recognition from the most important national sector guides: 11 regional labels awarded, including 4 from Rome, with “Tre Bicchieri 2024” from Gambero Rosso; 27 labels awarded, of which 11 from Rome, with the “5 Grappoli 2023” of the AIS Association – Italian Sommelier Association. A fundamental production sector for our region, which has already achieved an important level of reputation both in Italy and abroad, but which demonstrates a production potential still to be exploited to conquer new market spaces.

Support from the Region

«I believe that this year Lazio can be really proud of how it presents itself at this Vinitaly. We received appreciation from all the professionals and operators in the sector and, in particular, from the president of Veronafiere Federico Bricolo: this year’s Lazio pavilion was considered one of the most beautiful ever seen at Vinitaly. This is a way to make people understand how Lazio is an extraordinary showcase from a winemaking point of view, a way to recognize the extraordinary work of our wineries which continues to invest. They did it in difficult times, so they deserved the support that the Lazio Region will not fail to provide.” Thus the Councilor for Agriculture of the Lazio Region, Giancarlo Righini.
