leak triggers Nintendo’s ire against Switch emulators

Nintendo does not mess with security: following the leak of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom which occurred 10 days before its official release, the Japanese giant has mobilized a real legal brigade to counter and neutralize all Switch emulators in circulation on the market.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

If there’s one thing players love about Link’s New Adventures, it’s surprises. But, this time, the surprise is rather bitter for Nintendo. Just days away from the long-awaited launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, one of the most anticipated games of 2023, a big leak is disrupting the Mushroom Kingdom. The game is already available on the web, and not just for hackers looking to upstage Ganondorf.

Indeed, a pirated version of Tears of the Kingdom has been hanging around the web for several days and can be emulated on a (relatively powerful) PC. Suffice to say that Nintendo’s Toads had to go into red alert mode, and that angered the Japanese giant. But beware, we’re not talking about Bowser-style anger here, rather a series of legal blows.

Nintendo, piqué au vif

Nintendo, stung by these leaks, launched a series of DMCA requests against the Switch emulation tools on GitHub, requesting the removal of Lockpick, Lockpick_RCM and almost 80 other derivations. The Japanese firm invokes section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Actwhich largely makes it illegal to circumvent technological protection measures protecting copyrighted works.

Nintendo’s ambition is to intimidate and discourage the developers responsible for creating these emulators. And it works, Skyline team announced on Discord that it would cease development of the emulator on Android.

You could almost hear Nintendo’s sweet melody of victory, were it not for the fact that the damage is already done. Tears of the Kingdom is currently fairly easy to find online, as are the comprehensive guides to getting the game to work on PC emulation tools. We strongly advise against it: it takes hours of effort to run the game properly on a high-end PC, with many downloads from sites that push ad blockers to their limits.
