Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati held a consultative meeting with some ministers, this afternoon, Monday 8/5/2023, at the Grand Serail, during which discussions were held about vacancies in the governorship of the Banque du Liban, the displaced, and other important issues.
During the meeting, views were exchanged regarding the files presented and how to approach them, provided that the detailed matters will be discussed during the cabinet sessions when necessary.
Mikati informed the assembled ministers of the danger of the continuation of the presidential vacuum on the stability of the various state institutions, and the approaching of a vacancy date, which may be long, in the position of the governorship of the Banque du Liban, which requires everyone to assume responsibilities and push towards securing the quorum required to hold periodic cabinet sessions.
Al-Manar TV reported, quoting ministerial sources, that the issue of the displaced Syrians came to the table for discussion, while some ministers made interventions about the seriousness of the stage the country entered as a result of the increase in the number of displaced people, and others demanded rapid official steps through immediate and direct coordination with the Syrian authorities to alleviate the situation. The severity of this suffering for the Lebanese, and it was also proposed to set a close date for a session of the government to decide specifically on this issue.
The consultative meeting, which lasted for more than an hour, during which developments in the region were also assessed and reviewed, especially with regard to Syria’s return to its seat in the Arab League, and they hoped that this would reflect stability on Lebanon and neighboring countries.
According to ministerial sources, Prime Minister Mikati concluded the meeting by emphasizing the need for these consultative meetings to become periodic prior to holding any cabinet session to determine the most productive agenda and in a manner commensurate with the management of public utilities.
