A Lebanese immigrant who was caught sneaking across the US border admitted that he was a member of Hezbollah and hoped to build a bomb, and his destination was New York, The Washington Post revealed.

The US Border Patrol arrested Bassel Bassel Abadi, 22, on March 9 near Al Paso, Texas.

While in custody, he asked him what he was doing in the United States, and he replied, “I’m going to try to build a bomb,” according to a Border Patrol document obtained by The Washington Post.

In a later interview with the department, Abadi said he “trained with Hezbollah for seven years and served as an active member guarding weapons sites for another four years, according to internal ICE documents.”

He revealed that he fled Lebanon because he “did not want to kill people,” adding, “Once you enter, you can never leave.” Ebadi did not have documents when he entered the United States, claiming to have been robbed “at knifepoint” while in Costa Rica, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement documents.

He also admitted to using a fake birthday and name in Sweden, Ecuador and Panama this year. He said he originally hoped to go to New York and then move around the country.

Abadi was immediately removed and referred for interview with the Tactical Terrorism Response Team (TTRT) on charges of making “terrorist threats to employees.”

Internal documents show he was flagged for deportation from the United States, although it was not clear which country he would be returned to.
