Lebanese player withdraws from World Chess Championship in refusal to normalize

|

Today, Wednesday, a Lebanese chess player withdrew from the fifth round of the World Chess Championship in Georgia, refusing to normalize following she was drawn with an Israeli player.

The head of the Lebanese delegation, Jamal Shamiya, said that “the reason for the player’s withdrawal, Sally Hamadeh, is the nationality of her Israeli competitor,” stressing that “there is no recognition of the Zionist enemy and no normalization with the occupier.”

Hamada’s withdrawal comes, following last month witnessed the withdrawal of the Lebanese hero, Charbel Abu Daher, from the mixed martial arts championship in Abu Dhabi, refusing to confront an Israeli player. His compatriot Abdullah Miniato withdrew from the same tournament that was held in Bulgaria last year.
