Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – The Lebanese Parliament failed to elect a president for the country, on Wednesday, in the 12th session since the end of the term of former President Michel Aoun.

The former minister, Jihad Azour, received 59 votes out of 128 deputies who participated in the vote, while the head of the “Marada” movement, Suleiman Franjieh, got 51 votes, 7 votes went to Ziyad Baroud, 1 vote to Joseph Aoun, 8 votes for the new Lebanon, one white paper and one canceled paper.

Some deputies objected because Baroud initially got 6 votes, making the total number 127, and demanded a recount, pointing out the importance of Azour getting 60 votes in the first session.

For his part, Speaker of Parliament, Nabih Berri, requested that the missing vote be granted to Ziad Baroud, so that he would have 7 votes.

Lebanese media indicated that deputies representing Hezbollah and the Amal Movement withdrew from the session before the counting process began, which led to the loss of the quorum to hold a second session in which an absolute majority of 65 votes (64 + 1) is required.

It is noteworthy that the Lebanese parliament had held 12 sessions in which it failed to elect a new president for the country since Aoun left Baabda Palace in October 2022.
