Prosecutors have handed over the case of Lee Jae-myung, a former presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Korea, to the police over the suspicion of ‘Gyeonggi Housing and Urban Corporation (GH) dormitory non-sun camp’.
According to the Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office on the 13th, the case of ‘Lee Jae-myung GH dormitory non-sun camp suspicion’ reported by lawmakers such as National Assembly member Yoo Sang-beom (head of the Legal Support Team) was handed over to the Gyeonggi Nambu Police Agency at the end of last month.
The case was reported to the prosecution by lawmakers on the side of the national power in early last month, claiming that Bisun Camp staff used an apartment as a dormitory facility that was not suitable for its purpose to prepare for the presidential election process and activities of former candidate Lee.
An official from the prosecution said, “This case is a case of accusing Kim Hye-kyung of former candidate Lee’s wife, Kim Hye-kyung’s misappropriation of Gyeonggi-do corporate card.”
GH is a provincial organ. Former candidate Lee signed a two-year lease for an apartment worth 950 million won in Sunae-dong, Bundang-gu, Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi-do, in August 2020, when he was serving as the governor of Gyeonggi-do. The apartment is said to be the house next door to the former candidate.
GH said, “It is a dormitory for four employees,” and claimed that the reason for Lee’s contract was to use a simple dormitory for employees, but suspicions arose at the time of rental and the fact that it was the house next door to the former candidate.
A government official said, “There is no choice but to raise a reasonable suspicion that the dormitory near Lee’s residence was for preparations for the presidential election, such as preparing for Mr. Lee’s promises.”
The prosecution’s position is that the case was handed over to the police, as many cases related to former candidate Lee are currently being transferred to the Gyeonggi Nambu Office.
