Samara Weaving has reportedly joined the cast of Nintendo and Sony Pictures’ live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, adding another major franchise to her expanding blockbuster resume. Known widely as a modern genre icon for her roles in films like Ready or Not and Scream VI, the Australian actress is stepping into the video game adaptation following her recent casting as the White Queen, Emma Frost, in Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot.
While the exact character details remain tightly under wraps, the reported addition of Weaving highlights the star-studded ensemble being assembled for the fantasy epic. With principal photography having already wrapped back in April, industry observers note that her involvement in the Nintendo adaptation will not conflict with her upcoming commitments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The live-action adaptation of the beloved Nintendo franchise is directed by Wes Ball, who previously helmed Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Speaking about his approach to handling such a legendary property, Ball shared insights into managing fan expectations during a 2024 interview. “Fortunately, my training was on Maze Runner, which was a small but really passionate fan base,” Ball explained. “And now here I am in an Apes movie with an equally passionate fan base and a much bigger one. So I’ve been playing in this expectations game for a while. I understand it.”
Cast and Characters in the Hyrule Adaptation
Weaving joins an expanding roster of talent attached to bring the magical kingdom of Hyrule to the big screen. The primary cast is led by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as the young warrior Link, alongside Bo Bragason as Princess Zelda. They are joined by Uli Latukefu as the ruthless warlord Ganondorf, and Dichen Lachman as Impa, the loyal bodyguard and advisor to Princess Zelda. Additionally, Yvonne Strahovski and the late Sam Neill have been cast in mystery roles, alongside Lydia Peckham, who reunites with director Ball after starring in 2024’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
“I hear the fans, and I want them to be happy. I am a fan myself,” Ball noted regarding the weight of adapting the source material. “At some point though, I have to trust my instincts and I have to make choices, and I’ll do that – but coming from a place of real respect for and love for that property, which I’ve grown up with my entire life. It is so close to me and on so many levels.”
The Journey to the Big Screen
The narrative of the live-action film follows Link, a young warrior tasked with safeguarding the magical kingdom of Hyrule from encroaching forces of darkness. The land faces severe peril from Ganon, a ruthless adversary determined to secure the Triforce—an ancient relic said to grant limitless power. To thwart these plans, Link must embark on an expansive quest involving dangerous creatures, complex dungeons, and sacred artifacts.
As production milestones continue to pass, anticipation remains high across both gaming and film communities. The Legend of Zelda is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 7, 2027.
