The Legislative Council passed the “Gaming Duty (Amendment) Bill” for the third reading on Wednesday (21st), and the bill was approved by more than half of the members. The bill involves the collection of an additional football betting tax of 2.4 billion yuan per year from the Hong Kong Jockey Club for a period of 5 years, or a total of 12 billion yuan.

Ye Liushuyi: The adjustment of gaming tax will not harm the public

The chairman of the New Democratic Party, Yap Lau Suk-yee, said that the government is facing a huge fiscal deficit, but there are not many new taxes, and it is not feasible to implement sales tax and carbon emission tax. As for the adjustment of football betting tax, it will only affect the Jockey Club and will not cause harm to the public.

She also pointed out that the total amount of football betting has increased significantly in the past few years, and the net profits brought to the Jockey Club are astonishing, and the benefits even far exceed that of horse racing; while the Liberal Party Zhang Yuren proposed that in the future, gaming taxes on sports such as basketball can be considered.
