Leipzig beats BVB: dream comeback for Marco Rose

Status: 12.09.2022 00:01

Marco Rose’s Bundesliga comeback could hardly have gone better: with RB Leipzig he clearly won the Bundesliga against his former club Borussia Dortmund.

Willi Orban (5th minute) gave Leipzig the lead early on matchday 6, Dominik Szoboszlai increased shortly before the break (45th). Amadou Haidara (84th) set the final point for RB. For RB it was the second win of the season, Dortmund lost for the second time and missed the leap to the top of the table.

RB Leipzig’s Orban scores early – Szoboszlai late in the first half

Rose’s first few minutes could definitely have gone worse: After a little wobble at the beginning, Leipzig took the lead: After a corner kick from the right, Orban ran free in a wide arc in the BVB penalty area and hit his head. Dortmund keeper Alexander Meyer, who, as in the Champions League, replaced the injured Gregor Kobel, conceded his first goal after just five minutes in his first Bundesliga game.

RB then also earned the lead afterwards – BVB was a bit too airy at the back against the fast counterattacks from Leipzig and Dortmund themselves hardly had a promising chance of getting in front of Peter Gulacsi’s goal despite having the ball. The Austrian double six with Xaver Schlager and Konrad Laimer repeatedly successfully disrupted the combinations of Edin Terzic’s eleven. Shortly before the half-time whistle, the hosts made it 2-0 when Szoboszlai simply held on after a Leipzig switch from a good 22 meters and the ball hit the top right corner.

BVB pushes, but Roses Leipzig meet

Because the picture didn’t change in the second half, BVB coach Terzic drew two options after less than an hour: Youssoufa Moukoko and Giovanni Reyna replaced Julian Brandt and Marius Wolf. In fact, that gave a little momentum. After 62 minutes, Reyna crossed to the hitherto invisible Anthony Modeste, whose promising volley attempt was set too high.

But BVB lacked the necessary esprit to really put very stable Leipzigers under pressure. The hosts then concentrated even more on counterattacks and set up a very stable defensive chain around Orban and ex-Dortmunder Abdou Diallo, which mostly did their jobs without frills. Shortly before the end, Haidara finally put the lid on the game when he only had to accommodate a cross pass from the agile Timo Werner in the empty goal (84th).

Leipzig and Dortmund demanded in the Champions League

On Wednesday, both Leipzig and Dortmund have two football heavyweights in the Champions League in front of them. Leipzig travels to the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu to Real Madrid (September 14, 2022 at 9:00 p.m.). Dortmund is fighting Manchester City about important points. In the Bundesliga, the black and yellow invite you to the Revierderby against FC Schalke 04 next weekend (Saturday, September 17th, 2022 at 3:30 p.m.). Leipzig has to start the top game in Gladbach three hours later.
