2022, Les Folies fermières arrives on our screens and shows us a Jean-Pierre Améris at the best of his cinema, that of little people, of brotherhood, of courage and hope for a better future.

Intellectual break

It was unthinkable that this talented director would deviate from paths in which he sows the little stones of our time with a stunning accuracy of tone. This time, he brings us into the presence of Marie-Line, a young woman, barely thirty years old, living under the control of a father who is astounding with stupidity, even wickedness (Philippe Rebbot, as usual, excellent).

Shortly dressed and with punk-style dyed hair, she works in a bar, a true refuge for a Judge who comes to refine his cases in front of his eternal, well-filled, glass of whiskey. Marie-Line hangs out with Alexandre (Victor Belmondo, quite credible), a movie buff through and through. A little too much perhaps, to the point that the “intellectual” rift between the two broke out one fine day, leaving the young woman in distress.

Unlikely cut

Who says distress often means stupidity and here is Marie-Line in front of a Judge. Guess who ? She receives a fine which of course she cannot pay. The Judge then offers him, outside the Court of course, to become his driver because he no longer has a car…. In all honor, especially since more than a generation separates them.

These two beings shaken by life will learn to know each other. They will exchange, feed each other, tame each other. The shell of one will eventually crack while the wings of the other will finally unfold. Inspired by Murielle Magellan’s novel: Changing the Direction of Rivers, the latest opus by Jean-Pierre Améris tells us about an encounter and the new beginnings that it will provoke. It’s done with the sincerity that we know the director is capable of, a sincerity that goes straight to your heart. The unlikely couple formed by Louane Emera (discovered in The Aries Family in 2014) and Michel Blanc (he’s the Judge) works surprisingly well and takes this comedy with its unique little music to heights of emotion.
