‘Let the new ones come’; Aussie captain Aaron Finch has announced his retirement from ODI cricket
Australian player Aaron Finch has announced his retirement from international one-day cricket. Finch has announced that the third match of the ODI series against New Zealand on Sunday will be the last match of his ODI career.
In an official statement, Finch said: “I am extremely fortunate to have been a part of some of the best ODI tournaments for Australia.
‘It was a great trip with unbelievably good memories. The team needs a new captain to prepare and win the next World Cup. That is why the decision to retire is now being made,’ Finch said.
Finch played 145 ODIs for Australia and scored 5,401 runs at an average of 39.14. This will include 17 centuries and 30 fifties. The highest score is 153 runs.
Finch was a member of the Aussie team that won the ODI World Cup in 2015. Finch became the captain of the Australian team after the 2018 ball-tampering scandal. Finch led the Aussie team to the semi-finals in the 2019 ODI World Cup. Finch captained Australia to their maiden ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title in 2021. Finch has also won the award for the best Australian ODI player in 2020.
Thirty-five-year-old Finch will lead the Aussie team in the Twenty20 World Cup in Australia in October.
Meanwhile, Finch has been struggling to find form in ODI cricket in recent times. The player managed to score only 169 runs from the last 13 ODIs. In five of them, he was out for zero. It is against this backdrop that the retirement announcement is made.
