While interest in ISAs has increased due to the government’s push to expand the Individual Asset Management Account (ISA) tax system, subscribers to investment brokerage ISAs that can hold domestic stocks or ETFs have been found to have concentrated on purchasing US ETFs along with domestic blue-chip and dividend stocks.

ISA is an all-rounder that allows you to invest in a variety of financial assets, including deposits and savings, domestic stocks, funds, REITs, ETFs, and equity-linked securities (ELS) while receiving tax-exempt benefits for up to 2 million won (expected to expand to 5 million won in the future) of operating profits. The number of subscribers to the bank account has been increasing rapidly recently.

On the 26th, the Maeil Business Newspaper commissioned Samsung Securities, which holds the largest number of investment brokerage ISA accounts among domestic securities firms, to analyze the top stocks and ETFs based on the amount held by those accounts. As of this day, the number of brokerage ISA accounts held by Samsung Securities was 1.01 million and the balance was KRW 2.3101 trillion, exceeding KRW 2 trillion for the first time among securities companies.

Based on today’s balance, the stock most held by brokerage ISA investors was Samsung Electronics, valued at 157.8 billion won. Samsung Electronics preferred stock followed with KRW 86.8 billion, and the total value of Samsung Electronics stock alone reached KRW 244.6 billion.

As the semiconductor industry, which had been sluggish so far, has rebounded, demand for servers for AI (artificial intelligence) has increased, and demand for HBM (high bandwidth memory), a necessity for server construction, has also surged.

Samsung Electronics is currently submitting the next-generation HBM3E sample to NVIDIA and undergoing verification procedures, and its target stock price has also risen to 100,000 won this year due to expectations that future supply will become visible. On the 26th, it touched 80,000 won during the day and closed at 79,900 won, breaking the 52-week high. Investment brokerage account holders who make aggressive investments through ISA also responded to these expectations by holding the largest amount of Samsung Electronics stocks.

There was also a buying trend in representative high-dividend stocks. Investors invested 65 billion won in Macquarie Infrastructure and 50.1 billion won in POSCO Holdings.

While actively investing not only in individual stocks but also through ETFs, funds were especially invested in ETFs that invest in the U.S. stock market, which is currently on a high.

Investors own 40 billion won worth of TIGER U.S. S&P 500, which tracks the Standard & Poor’s (S&P) 500 index, which has already set record highs more than 16 times this year alone. This is the largest ETF held by Samsung Securities’ investment brokerage ISA account.

TIGER US NASDAQ 100, TIGER US Tech TOP 10 INDXX, and TIGER US Philadelphia Semiconductor NASDAQ, which invest in big tech companies that are leading the boom in related industries not only in the US but around the world, such as NVIDIA and AMD, also attracted 20 billion won each.

In addition, investors were found to have purchased 31.8 billion won worth of ad-hoc RP (repurchase agreement bonds) and 26.7 billion won worth of Naver stocks.

Meanwhile, thanks to the advantage of being able to invest in a variety of assets, unlike trust-type and discretionary-type ISAs, subscriptions to investment brokerage-type ISAs, which can only be signed up through securities companies, are rapidly increasing.

According to the Korea Financial Investment Association, as of the end of January this year, the number of investment brokerage ISA subscribers was 3.96 million, and the investment amount was KRW 10.2686 trillion, up 12% and 52%, respectively, from 3.53 million and KRW 6.7325 trillion a year ago.
