Already for some time, one has been hearing negative reviews of the Geneva Museum of Art and History ranging from “uninteresting” to “cheesy”. Today, the Swiss artist and curator Ugo Rondinone offers our museum a new splendour, a new dignity.
“I staged a game of echoes and responses between two great Swiss artists who occupy a special place in the museum’s collection: Félix Vallotton and Ferdinand Hodler. Painted on foot and in arms, Hodler’s warriors respond to Vallotton’s nudes, thus creating a contrast between strength and vulnerability, the protection of the body and its unveiling.
What a beautiful scene! The paintings are not hung on the walls, but placed on the ground, upright. On entering the room, one is first dazzled by the architectural beauty of the walls, then one discovers all the paintings, all facing; they occupy the center. For Hodler, the room on the right, and for Vallotton, the room on the left. Splendid!
Turning around before continuing the visit, we discover on the backs of the paintings, preparatory drawings for the various works. The sequel has many more surprises in store for the visitor, which I’ll let you discover for yourselves. Genevoises and Genevoises, run to your museum, you will not be disappointed, on the contrary!
