Level 4: The risk of avalanches increases massively due to fresh snow

The current weather models are predicting heavy snowfall for large parts of Tyrol in the next few days. In three seasons, starting on Thursday, amounts of fresh snow of up to one and a half meters are possible. With the masses of fresh snow, the danger of avalanches also increases drastically.

“According to the current weather models, the areas with the most fresh snow are the Kitzbühel Alps, the Hohe Tauern and the Zillertal and Tux Alps. On Friday it will loosen up slightly during the day. However, further heavy snowfalls are expected on Saturday and in the night from Sunday to Monday. The snowfall is also largely transported with the stormy Tauern wind.”informs Susanne Lentner from GeoSphere Austria.

Weak snow cover and lots of fresh snow

The Tyrolean avalanche warning service is already counting on tomorrow, Thursday high avalanche danger (level 4) in the east of Tyrol, in the rest of the country with significant avalanche danger (level 3). Reasons for the delicate avalanche situation are the combination of a lot of fresh snow, wind and a weak snow cover. You should therefore exercise the utmost caution in the open ski area, it is better to only stay on secured slopes. Restraint and defensive behavior are strongly recommended.
