Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski has joined the final list of 3 players for the FIFA World Player of the Year award for 2021, but he faces competition from Egyptian star Mohamed Salah and Argentine Lionel Messi.
FIFA announced the names of the three players in a presentation before handing out the award on January 17, as part of a television program in Zurich.
Lewandowski won the award in 2020 and former Germany international Sami Khedira said there was a “high chance” of retaining the award.
“I will bet on him because he is a very amazing player,” Khedira said following the shortlist was announced.
Lewandowski has achieved many records, but Salah, the Liverpool star, is presenting a great level, even if Messi, with Paris Saint-Germain, may not be at his best.
In the shortlist for the best player are Jennifer Hermoso and Alexia Botías of Barcelona, and Sam Kerr of Chelsea.
