Lewiston massacre witnesses and locals shocked: ‘It’s crazy’

Witnesses to the Lewiston shooting ranged in age, including teenagers, Auburn Mayor Jason Levesque said, adding that the small-town community was in shock.

Auburn is a town less than 2 miles west of Lewiston.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Levesque said there was a lot of fear, panic and anxiety among the population.

“You can prepare for it, but you can never be fully prepared,” Levesque said. “It’s a situation where everyone has to be ready.”

Speaking to CNN later that evening, Levesque said he did not know of any children among the dead, but he did know of one high school student who was injured.

“Auburn and Lewiston are right next to each other … we’re separated by a river. Combined, our population is about 60,000. You can’t help but know people who know someone, so it affects every corner of our community,” he said.

The mayor said he heard more about what happened Wednesday night from witnesses, including one man who was playing a game of cornhole on the lawn at the time of the incident when he heard “a couple of explosions … but didn’t think anything of it, it’s almost Halloween.” . Then he saw everyone screaming and running.”
