The agreement with the Shanghai government was finalized on April 22, and construction is already underway. Spanning approximately 1.13 million square meters, the plant is strategically significant for Toyota’s global EV ambitions.

Following Tesla, Toyota is now the second foreign automaker to establish a fully owned auto plant in Shanghai.

The construction is slated for completion in August 2026, with production expected to commence in 2027. The plant will have an annual production capacity of up to 100,000 new energy vehicles (NEVs), according to *The Paper*.

Localized Production And Innovation

The Lexus plant will not only boost EV output but also focus on developing vehicles tailored to the preferences of Chinese consumers.

To maximize efficiency, Toyota has implemented a “two-line collaboration” system at the Shanghai Bay Area Hi-Tech Zone facility, enabling “24-hour uninterrupted work.”
