Canadian tennis players Leylah Annie Fernandez and Gabriela Dabrowski both fell short of capturing titles at the Toray Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo on Sunday. Fernandez forced a decisive third set against Diana Shnaider before falling 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in the singles final, while Dabrowski and partner Luisa Stefani dropped the doubles final 6-2, 6-2 to Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani.
Fernandez Pushes Shnaider in Hard-Fought Singles Final
The singles championship match saw intense pressure from both sides of the court. Fernandez, the 24-year-old from Laval, held 12 break points during the encounter compared to Shnaider’s eight. However, Shnaider proved more clinical by converting six of her opportunities, while Fernandez capitalized on four.
The Canadian found herself facing a double break deficit in each set. In the opening frame, Shnaider seized control by winning eight straight points from 3-2 and eventually served it out at 5-2, despite a resilient comeback attempt from Fernandez that included saving a set point and breaking back.
The second set followed a similar trajectory as Shnaider surged ahead 4-0 following consecutive breaks. Fernandez clawed her way back once again, breaking in the tenth game and winning eight of the final ten balls to level the match. In the decisive third set, however, Fernandez dropped her serve from 2-2 onward, allowing the third-seeded Shnaider to close out the match on her first championship point.
Fernandez now pivots to her final stop of the year in Hong Kong. She looks to secure a third-straight final appearance, opening her WTA 250 tournament campaign against Sofia Kenin on Tuesday.
Italians Flip the Script in Tokyo Doubles Final
In the doubles draw, Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani were unable to replicate their earlier success against Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani. The Canadian-Brazilian tandem had previously defeated the Italian pair in a tight two-setter at the Beijing tournament in early October. In Tokyo, however, Paolini and Errani claimed a straightforward 6-2, 6-2 victory.
The Italian duo did not face a single break point throughout the match, converting four of their nine break opportunities. Both sets followed an identical pattern, with Dabrowski and Stefani suffering a break in the third game to fall behind 3-1. Errani and Paolini secured the championship on their first match point in the second set.
