LGBTQ “Hide and live. That’s more beautiful.” Shimotsuke city councilor who belongs to the Happiness Realization Party said. Explaining “I do not intend to discriminate” | HuffPost NEWS

In June 2022, Nobuo Ishikawa, a city councilor of Shimotsuke City, Tochigi Prefecture (Happiness Realization Party), discriminated against LGBTQ people by saying, “If possible, I want you to live quietly and hide it. It’s more beautiful.” I found out that I was making a statement.

In an interview with HuffPost Japan, Mr. Ishikawa explained, “I meant that I didn’t have to go out of my way to make it public. I don’t mean to discriminate.”

“Hiding is more beautiful”

The remarks in question were made at the regular meeting of the city council on June 10th. Ishikawa asked about the “partnership oath system” that Tochigi Prefecture was planning to introduce in September to officially certify the relationship of sexual minority couples.

In it, Mr. Ishikawa said, “I’m not a discriminator,” and said, “I don’t care if men live together or women live together. I have serious doubts as to whether or not this kind of thing is acceptable to society,” he said.

Regarding LGBTQ people, he said, “I want people to live quietly and hidden. rice field.

In response, Shimotsuke City Mayor Hisao Hirose (at the time) said, “We still see a situation in which many sexual minorities are not able to protect their human rights and live with peace of mind.” After showing his recognition, he replied that the “partnership oath system” would be one of the efforts aimed at realizing a society where everyone can live in their own way.

When Mr. Ishikawa asked the question again, he questioned the mayor as follows.

“The mayor speaks of human rights, but we must not forget that there is the priesthood above human rights, and that there are God’s rights. Then, we should not forget that we made a distinction between men and women.”

In addition, he said, “There are various social problems. There are problems such as men entering women’s toilets and bathing.”

Hirose replied, “Society advances by acknowledging the positions, positions, and ways of thinking of various people.”

Mr. Ishikawa is the representative of the Happiness Realization Party’s prefectural headquarters and was elected to the city council in April this year for a second term.

When asked by HuffPost Japan over the phone about the intentions of his remarks in the parliament, Ishikawa replied, “As the parliament says, I don’t mean to discriminate (against LGBTQ people).”

When a reporter pointed out that the statement “I want you to live in hiding” may encourage discrimination and bullying, I responded as follows.

“I’m saying that you don’t have to do it until you get it to be recognized as a system. It’s okay if you can live your life quietly. I’m saying that isn’t it,” he said.

Marriage between people of the same gender is not legally recognized in Japan. Regarding the issue of marriage equality, he said, “There are people who want marriage to be recognized, but I don’t think it’s necessary to go that far.”

The article also explains, “As a religious political party, we believe that excessive consideration for LGBTQ people and the legalization of same-sex marriage deviate from the original purpose of gender-segregated Shintoism and Buddhism.”

Ishikawa also opposes LGBTQ rights advocacy policies, including the partnership system, and admitted in an interview with HuffPost Japan that it was because of his religious background.

reinforce discrimination and oppression

Rep. Ishikawa argues that while it is fine for people involved to live quietly, he opposes a system that publicly recognizes their existence.

Sotsugu Matsuoka, representative director of the general incorporated association fair, points out that this stance is “a remark that promotes discrimination and oppression against sexual minorities.”

“As a member of the legislature, who has the potential to directly influence policy, I think that saying, ‘I want you to live quietly and hidden,’ is exactly the act of complicit in suppressing sexual minorities.”

“This is like saying, ‘You shouldn’t be publicly recognized, you should continue to live in the shadows.’ I think it’s very problematic to have an attitude that you should continue. Your qualities as a lawmaker should be questioned.

“Recently, the former Unification Church has been attracting attention, and I think that ‘religion’ is also related to Rep. Ishikawa’s remarks this time. I would like people to pay attention to the fact that there are political ties with various religious groups with strong discriminatory perceptions.”
