On July 12, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) announced that wireless communication technology Li-Fiwas accepted as standard. Li-Fi is a wireless communication technology that boasts a speed up to 100 times faster than Wi-Fi, and 802.11bb was adopted as an international standard, accelerating its commercialization.
Compared to Wi-Fi or 5G, which use radio frequencies, Li-Fi is incomparably faster and more secure. The industry’s position is that it is safe from the risk of eavesdropping or hacking because it has a wider range of spectrum that can operate than radio frequencies. Li-Fi can be used by anyone as long as there is an LED, and it can communicate even in places where radio waves cannot be used, such as underwater or in an airplane. Due to its high security, Apple conducted related research to adopt it in a new iPhone model in 2016, but it was eventually stopped because it might not solve the commercialization problem.
The commercialization of Li-Fi was carried out in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute. Pure Li-Fihas contributed PureLi-Fi produced antenna modules for Li-Fi and helped enter the OEM intervening phase.
As the IEEE has recognized Li-Fi as a standard, it is likely that there will be additional news from the related industry.
