History of the custom of “paying love”

Today, Mid-Lent Sunday in Gmunden is also known as “Love Sunday”. The original custom of sharing a meal for the poor was replaced over time by the procession of the “love heart”.

The “Liebstattherz” has a special meaning for many residents of Gmunden. It is considered a symbol of love and hope and is often revered as an object of protection and healing. Many people believe that it can help against physical and emotional pain and ask for help and comfort in difficult situations.

Exactly, this custom was established in 1641 by the Bishop of Passau for the spa town of Gmunden am Traunsee. The city pastor was commissioned to invite the poor of the city to a common meal on the fourth Sunday of Lent and to serve it himself.

Overall, the Liebstatt Sunday with the “Liebstatt heart” is an important part of the local culture and history of Gmunden. The tradition is maintained to this day and every year it attracts many visitors who are attracted by the special atmosphere and the symbolism of the heart.
