An Accidental Discovery Along Wolgon Road
The startling weekend discovery took place in rural New South Wales. Two men driving along Wolgon Road in Oallen—about 61km south of Goulburn and roughly 75 kilometres north-east of Canberra, and 185km south-west of Sydney—pulled over by chance for a break on Sunday afternoon, according to New South Wales police.
They made what Supt Linda Bradbury described as a quite a shocking discovery for them, absolutely
after noticing an abandoned suitcase by the side of the road. Police received the call at about 12.50pm on Sunday, August 9, 2026, following reports from members of the public that human remains had been located inside a bag, prompting officers attached to The Hume Police District to rush to the remote location in the southern tablelands.
Why the Suitcase Was Mistaken for Human Remains
The initial response triggered widespread media attention, including by the Guardian, because a police statement declaring a a body in a suitcase
had been found was issued to media on Sunday night. Officers responding to the scene located a bag with what was believed to be the remains of a female on the side of the road.
Earlier on Monday, Supt Linda Bradbury had told Channel Nine that the female remains have been subject to a state of decomposition
and stated, We’re conducting a number of inquiries to assist us in locating the identification of the female and also how she ended up in that location.
She added, We are relying a lot on forensic evidence.
Initial investigations were undertaken by forensic officers at the scene, and a crime scene was established while the suitcase was seized to undergo forensic examination.
Supt Linda Bradbury explained to reporters why investigators initially treated the scene as a potential homicide and why it took some time to determine the remains were not human. She stated, We don’t like to disturb them too much in situ, particularly when we have faced inclement weather, as we did yesterday and again today.
Bradbury noted that they were very realistic in terms of looking like human remains
before adding, But we’ve confirmed by other means that they are not. We don’t have a suspicious death of a human on our hands.

Authorities confirmed in a statement that the item located in the bag was a lifelike doll, wearing clothing, with hair and a nose piercing. The item also had markings that resembled bruises and grazes.
With laboratory testing complete, law enforcement officials officially announced that investigations have concluded, bringing an end to fears of a suspicious death in the regional Australian community.
