At what point does money make the result in the French Ligue 2 championship ? If we had to answer it in a few words, we would say that it counts, but not necessarily. Clearly, it is better to be rich to perform, the proof being that at the end of the 2021-2022 season, the Toulouse Football Club, as the richest on the board (27.145 M€ generated), found the elite of the soccer. And at the same time, AC Ajaccio with, despite much more modest means (9.201 M€ in income) also succeeded.

Conversely, nothing predestined AS Nancy Lorraine to go down (12.309 M€). And yet… Below have been compiled the financial performance of the teams of the financial year 2022 of the second division hierarchy of French football. This, taking the data freshly published by the National Directorate of Control and Management (DNCG). Add to it FC Metz, Girondins de Bordeaux and ASSEsince they were relegated from Ligue 1.

The differential between these three clubs and the rest of the championship is interesting, because it gives us an idea, albeit broad, of the gap in income produced, from one division to another. By revenue, we mean all the classic receipts of a football club: TV rights, sponsorship, merchandising, ticketing, subscriptions, hospitality, etc. All, with the exception of operations carried out on the transfer market; a separate exercise, although essential, especially for some, because it absorbs losses.

Excluding those relegated from Ligue 1 and those promoted from the National, the 15 clubs present in Ligue 2 last season, cumulate 167.606 million euros in turnover, i.e. an average for each of just over 11 million euros. Almost exactly the equivalence of Nîmes Olympique.
