(APS) – Two hundred and sixty women serving at the Blaise Diagne International Airport in Diass (AIBD) and others living in the villages surrounding the airport platform were screened for breast cancer on Thursday during a a campaign organized by the Limak-AIBD-Summa Women’s Association (AFLAS).

“We had 260 women” screened, Marame Kébé Ndiaye, president of AFLAS, told APS at the end of a breast cancer screening session extended to women from villages surrounding Blaise International Airport. Diagne de Diass.

To mark the month of October dedicated to the fight against breast and cervical cancer, the women of LAS held their third screening session, in collaboration with the Senegalese League for the Fight against Cancer (LISCA) , with which AFLAS has been in partnership since 2019.

This meeting, held at the AIBD pilgrims’ station, was also a great moment of raising awareness about these feminine conditions.

According to Mansour Niang, secretary general of LISCA, a high-level team was mobilized for the occasion, to ensure “quality screening” for “at least 400 women”. Positive cases will benefit from a free mammogram from LISCA, he promised.

Given the sneaky nature of women’s cancers, the most common in Senegal, only awareness and early detection can prevent them, she noted, not without regretting the fact that most patients go to the hospital late. ‘hospital.

In a context of proliferation of risk factors, such as poor diet, lack of breastfeeding, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, etc., screening must be done “every two to three years”, while being coupled with the vaccination of young girls against cervical cancer, she advocated. However, she warned against x-rays that are too close together which can cause “radiation-induced cancer”.

The head of the LAS medico-social service, Doctor Aïcha Fall, welcomed this gesture of solidarity from the women of LAS who, unlike last year, decided for this edition to extend screening to women from neighboring villages. from the airport, most of whom do not benefit from medical care and have limited income.

An action which, according to Samba Ndiaye who represented the general management of LAS at the opening ceremony, could be included in the corporate social responsibility (CSR) of LAS.
