A reader complained to Zhongshi News.com that he was studying for a master’s degree in the United States, and he went back to Taiwan to see his family during the summer vacation. When he visited his grandmother, he talked about his study. The grandmother asked him, “Have you written a thesis?” He replied, “I choose not to write it. That kind of dissertation”, I didn’t expect my grandmother to change her face and scold: “How can you not write a dissertation when you are studying for a master’s degree? You will be talked about when you go out like this! How can people believe that you have a master’s degree? Is this kind of master’s degree useful? How can you call it a master without a thesis? Master’s degree?” It made him very dumbfounded, and he called out the controversy over the thesis of DPP Taoyuan mayoral candidate Lin Zhijian, which caused the whole Taiwanese grandchildren to suffer.
The complainant stated that he explained to his grandmother that there are two types of masters in the United States that require a dissertation and no dissertation.
The complainant said that it was only later that he found out that his grandmother was “chasing deeply” about Lin Zhijian’s thesis case, and she scolded him as soon as he turned on the TV or watched the news online. Originally, he would have cared about the thesis, but now the case is so noisy that even he suffers.
The complainant also added that recently his father went to visit his 80-year-old grandmother, and he also sat and listened to her dissertation case for half an hour, from President Tsai Ing-wen to Lin Zhijian, “Fortunately, my father has written a master’s thesis.”
