Jurors in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy announced they were unable to reach a unanimous verdict on whether the Massachusetts mother was criminally responsible for killing her three young children, but a judge instructed them to keep trying. The 12-person panel, consisting of nine women and three men, reached its first impasse after entering its fourth day of deliberations.
Deliberations Continue After Jury Reports Impasse

Sullivan told the jurors. After deliberating further, the jury asked around 3:30 p.m. to be excused for the day, and Sullivan instructed them to return to court for a fifth day of deliberations.
Clancy, a 36-year-old former labor and delivery nurse, does not dispute that she strangled her 5-year-old daughter Cora, 3-year-old son Dawson, and 8-month-old son Callan with exercise bands in the basement of their Duxbury home on January 24, 2023. However, she has pleaded not guilty by reason of lack of criminal responsibility.
Conflicting Expert Testimony and Mental Health Focus
The closely watched trial centered heavily on maternal mental health following childbirth. Defense attorney Kevin Reddington argued that Clancy was suffering from severe bipolar disorder and postpartum psychosis—a rare mental illness estimated to affect one to two out of 1,000 women after delivery. Witnesses, including Clancy’s mother and sister, testified that she became anxious, paranoid, and suicidal following the birth of her third child, leading to treatment that included a stay in a psychiatric hospital. Her defense team asserted that she heard a voice telling her to kill the children so she could end her own life. Following the killings, Clancy cut herself and jumped from a second-story window in an apparent suicide attempt, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down.
In contrast, prosecutors argued that Clancy made a conscious, premeditated choice to kill the children because she was depressed and tired of living. A forensic psychologist testifying for the prosecution concluded that she killed the children because she wanted to end her life but did not want to leave them behind. State evidence highlighted actions taken immediately prior to the incident, including sending her then-husband, Patrick Clancy, out to collect a food order and visit a pharmacy while she mapped how long his return would take.
Potential Legal Outcomes and Next Steps
Under Massachusetts law, Judge Sullivan can encourage the jury to continue deliberating, but cannot do so more than twice unless the jury consents (NBC News wire). If the panel ultimately remains deadlocked and unable to reach a unanimous verdict, the judge may declare a mistrial.
Should a mistrial be declared, prosecutors would face decisions on whether to retry Clancy before a new group of jurors, negotiate a plea deal, or drop the charges. A mistrial differs from an acquittal, which would bar prosecutors from retrying her under double jeopardy protections, though an acquitted defendant could still be ordered confined to a mental health facility if evaluated as a public danger. If convicted of first-degree murder, Clancy faces life in prison without parole, alongside options for the jury to consider lesser charges such as second-degree murder or manslaughter.
