Link Between Migraine and Stroke in Young Women: Neurologist’s Insights

Women who experience severe headaches are also at a higher risk of having a heart attack.

Stroke is a serious and life-threatening medical emergency that occurs , when the blood supply to the brain is blocked.

It is usually caused by a blood clot or rupture of a blood vessel in the brain. There are several risk factors for stroke, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol. But scientists believe that there may be another, fairly common potential risk.

“Scientists have found that migraine sufferers are more likely to have a stroke before the age of 60, in particular, the most common form of stroke caused by a blood clot,” says neurologist Alexandra Alekhina, commenting on the study specifically for MedikForum.

The study also showed that only women may carry the additional risk of heart attack and hemorrhagic stroke, a stroke caused by a ruptured blood vessel.

It is believed that people diagnosed with migraine have a higher risk of heart attack or stroke before the age of 60.

“Previous research has shown that an increased risk of ischemic stroke — when a blood clot blocks a blood vessel leading to the brain — mostly affects young women.”

Overall, the results show that women are more affected by migraines, especially because the condition is predominantly diagnosed in women. Therefore, migraine may be associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction and hemorrhagic stroke only among women.
