[디지털투데이 황치규 기자]CNBC, citing sources familiar with the internal situation, reported on the 14th (local time) that LinkedIn, which has secured more than 1 billion users as a business SNS platform, has canceled its plan to transfer its IT infrastructure to the Azure cloud operated by its parent company, Microsoft. reported.

LinkedIn announced plans to move its infrastructure to Azure in 2019 under the codename BlueShift, but canceled them.

LinkedIn was acquired by Microsoft in 2016 for $27 billion and has been using Azure cloud for certain tasks.

LinkedIn’s decision is expected to be a blow to Microsoft, which is chasing Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the cloud service market.

The issues surrounding the transition plan arose as LinkedIn attempted to use its own software tools instead of those readily available on Azure, CNBC cited a source as saying.

This means that the problem arose when LinkedIn attempted to convert existing software tools to Azure without refactoring them to run in line with what was already in place on Azure. Refactoring means rearranging the code structure without changing the result. LinkedIn has since been building additional data centers to handle its computing needs, the people said.

Mohawk Shroff, LinkedIn’s vice president of engineering, announced Blueshift in a blog post in 2019, saying, “Moving to Azure will provide unprecedented access to a wide range of hardware and software innovations on a global scale.”

But sources say LinkedIn employees began noticing last year that the company was not moving forward with its plans to move to Azure. LinkedIn executives emphasized that the BlueShift project is not being canceled entirely, CNBC reported.

In a June 2022 memo to research and development staff, CTO Raghu Hiremagalur said LinkedIn will continue to use Azure services and work to scale and innovate across our on-premises infrastructure. “We will focus on,” he said.

He explained that given the tremendous demand for Azure and the growth of the LinkedIn platform, the company decided to temporarily suspend the LinkedIn transition to allocate resources to external Azure customers.

According to another internal document seen by CNBC, LinkedIn and Microsoft agreed to postpone plans to run LinkedIn’s website on Azure.
