Lionel Messi Injury Update: Inter Miami’s Victory and Team Performance Outshines Setback

2023-09-21 02:33:32

Lionel Messi left Inter Miami’s duel in the 37th minute after suffering a leg injury during a duel against Toronto FC on Wednesday in his team’s 4-0 victory.

A few minutes earlier, his teammate Jordi Albi also left the match.

The Argentine had several quality touches in the penalty area during the first half, but each time his efforts were in vain.

It was ultimately Facundo Farias who opened the scoring during stoppage time in the first half when TFC goalkeeper Tomas Romero punched the ball directly in his direction. Without hesitation, Farias volleyed the ball to open the scoring.

The loss of the two stars did not slow Miami down. Entering for Messi, Robert Taylor scored a double in the second half, in addition to setting up Benjamin Cremaschi’s goal in the 73rd minute.

Messi was substituted in the 37th minute and spent a few minutes suffering from what appeared to be a leg problem. He stretched during the game, then eventually took off his captain’s armband and simply waited for the game to stop so he could leave, without even waiting to get off the field to unlace his cleats, pull down his socks and take off his Shin pads.

Inter head coach Tata Martino said after the match that Alba and Messi would be assessed in the coming days, but neither player would be available to play against Orlando on Sunday so they would be ready for the finalU.S. Open Cup against the Houston Dynamo next Wednesday.

Messi had missed his last two matches – one for club, the other for selection – in recent days.
