Yang Chengzhan, director of the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Mennonite Hospital, shares how traditional Chinese medicine protects the liver and maintains health.

To dispel the myths that many people have regarding liver disease, Mennonite Hospital specially held a “Lecture on Liver Protection with Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine” and invited Dr. Zheng Muliang, director of the Chronic Liver Disease Prevention and Treatment Center, and Dr. Yang Chengzhan, director of the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, to talk regarding liver protection and health care from the perspectives of traditional Chinese and western medicine, to help more people. People have a healthy liver.

The liver is a silent organ. By the time tumors are discovered, they are usually already at an advanced stage. Hepatitis B and C, which appear to be asymptomatic, are actually the biggest culprits of national diseases that cause death. Zheng Muliang, director of the Liver Disease Prevention and Treatment Center at Mennonite Hospital, said that people with hepatitis B and C may not necessarily have symptoms, but the liver may have been severely inflamed. Therefore, in addition to calling on the public to follow up regularly, receive active treatment, develop exercise habits, and eat a healthy and balanced diet Living habits such as not staying up late and not staying up late are the only way to prevent liver disease.

In addition to the perspective of Western medicine, Yang Chengzhan, director of the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine at Mennonite Hospital, also shared TCM’s liver-protecting and health-preserving methods. He pointed out that in traditional Chinese medicine, strong liver fire does not mean liver disease! When the liver’s dispersion function is out of balance, it will lead to stagnation of liver qi, and more seriously, strong liver fire, which is similar to the autonomic nervous system disorder caused by overactive sympathetic nerves in the body in modern medicine. Traditional Chinese medicine emphasizes “syndrome differentiation and treatment” and “tailor-made” appropriate treatment according to individual constitution. The public must not mistakenly believe in the many unknown liver-protecting folk remedies in the market to avoid counter-effects and increase the burden on the liver.

In order to achieve a better liver-protecting effect, Dr. Yang Chengzhan recommends that people usually massage liver-protecting acupoints, such as the “Shenmen point” in the groove on the ulnar side of the wrist, the bulge on the outside of the knee four finger widths downward, and the outside of the calf bone. The “Zusanli point” regarding a thumb’s width away, the “Sanyinjiao point” on the inner side of the calf 3 inches above the inner ankle joint, and the “Taichong point” in the depression where the first and second toe bones meet on the back of the foot are all helpful. It has the functions of calming the nerves, reconciling blood and qi, nourishing liver and blood, replenishing spleen and calming liver fire.
