Liverpool agree £123m deal for PSG forward Barcola

Liverpool have agreed a deal worth up to £123m with Paris Saint-Germain for forward Bradley Barcola. The 23-year-oid France international is scheduled to undergo a medical before signing a long-term contract at Anfield, as manager Andoni Iraola secures his primary attacking target ahead of the transfer deadline.

Negotiations and Financial Breakdown of the Pursuit

The agreement caps a patient pursuit by the Merseyside club, which finalised an agreement worth an initial £106m (€125m) with potentially rising to £123m in potential add-ons. Paris Saint-Germain initially valued the France attacker at £145m, but Liverpool successfully negotiated terms following key talks involving sporting director Richard Hughes, chief executive Billy Hogan, Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon, and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. Barcola had been committed to an Anfield move despite having two years left on his PSG contract.

As part of the intricate transaction, Liverpool will make an additional £4.3m (€5m) solidarity payment to cover sell-on costs previously negotiated by Lyon when Barcola moved to the French capital in 2023 for a reported £38.5m. The total package places the potential valuation at £123m.

The imminent transfer was leaked ahead of official confirmation when his hairdresser posted a video of the star winger with the caption showing him ready to make the trip over to Merseyside from Paris. Fabrizio Romano subsequently gave the proposed transfer the ‘here we go’ treatment with documents set to be exchanged over the next 24 hours, while David Ornstein reported the underlying agreement in principle on Thursday morning for a deal worth around £120m overall.

Squad Impact and Tactical Fit Under Andoni Iraola

Barcola arrives to bolster an attacking unit reshaped by the departures of Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz over the past two summers. Operating primarily as a right-footed left winger, his impending arrival comes as Liverpool begin this season under new management with Andoni Iraola at the helm. At PSG, Barcola had fallen behind Désiré Doué in the pecking order, leading him to look for a move elsewhere. During his time in Paris, he has won three Ligue 1 titles, two Champions Leagues, the French Cup twice, as well as the Uefa Super Cup.

Manager Andoni Iraola and Liverpool’s board spent two months negotiating with PSG to finally agree a fee for the Frenchman, who the club hopes can fill the void left by Mohamed Salah after his departure at the end of last season.

“We need wingers who can make the difference, who can be the man who can make the difference in isolation, who can attack the spaces, who can also do the defensive work that we are going to demand from them in terms of pressing or sometimes following the full-backs. And also if they can provide numbers then it’s perfect.”

The arrival of Barcola also casts uncertainty around Cody Gakpo’s future at Liverpool, as he joins a crowded group at the position. Multiple sources have told BBC Sport both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City have shown interest in the Netherlands forward, and Iraola acknowledged the delicate squad dynamics when questioned.

“[Gakpo] has been very good since he came back from the World Cup and his holiday, with a very good attitude.”

Iraola added when pressed on the player’s long-term prospects that he cannot guarantee anything.

Alternative Targets and the Closing Window

Before settling on Barcola as a main target, Liverpool explored several alternative options to reinforce their flanks. Liverpool are also in the market for a right winger, having explored moves for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh and Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr before the transfer window closes next week. With just four days left of the summer window, time is running out for clubs to finalise deals before Tuesday’s deadline.
