The terminally ill Swedish coaching legend Sven-Göran Eriksson will coach a legend team from Liverpool FC in a charity game, which will compete against a former team from Ajax Amsterdam. The Reds announced this on Tuesday.
Joining the former England coach, who led the Three Lions to the World Cup quarter-finals in 2002 and 2006, will be club icons such as Ian Rush, John Barnes and John Aldridge in the dugout. This is a dream come true for the 76-year-old.
Sven-Göran Eriksson announced in January that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and that he had “at best another year” to live.
The proceeds go to charity
The Swede also spoke of his love for Liverpool in a round of TV interviews in which he spoke about his illness. He always dreamed of becoming the club’s coach, but that never happened. Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp then invited Eriksson to spend a day with him at Anfield.
Former Liverpool stars such as defender Martin Skrtel and goalkeeper and Champions League hero Jerzy Dudek will play for the team that the 76-year-old Eriksson will look after on March 23rd. Ryan Babel, who played for both Liverpool and Ajax as a professional, will play a half for each team. 100 percent of the proceeds from the game will go to charity.
