Liverpool got 2024 off to a good start by beating Newcastle 4-2 on Matchday 20 of the Premier League. The Reds are thus alone at the top of the ranking after this very spectacular match.
However, nothing was easy for Liverpool against Fabian Schär’s Magpies. Goalkeeper Dubravka indeed achieved an extraordinary performance by making numerous saves, including a first penalty from Salah (22nd). He was also saved by his post on an extraordinary volley from Alexander-Arnold (40th).
The Reds scored through Salah (49th/86th pen), Jones (74th) and Gakpo (78th). Newcastle responded with Isak (54th) and Botman (81st). For his last match before leaving for the CAN, Salah was decisive with a double and an assist. Liverpool are three points ahead of Aston Villa, as well as five points ahead of Manchester City – who have played one game less – and Arsenal.
