Geneva, May 3
We followed with great interest the article and the report relating to the provenance of the freshly planted trees in the rue des Rois, in the city of Geneva. A reader of “20 minutes”, of the edition of April 11, is astonished to see planting in Geneva of the trees which come from the Netherlands. The subject is taken up by the RTS which devotes a report to it at “7:30 p.m.”. We learn that the local cultivation of trees does not cover the needs of the City of Geneva and that its services are forced to buy trees outside our borders, at the risk of inducing a highly questionable carbon footprint.
These claims are wrong! In the canton of Geneva alone, the two main producers (the Jacquet SA nursery and the Geneva nurseries) together reach more than 40 hectares, or 15,000 trees and shrubs. These Geneva nurseries are labeled GRTA, which guarantees local production, respectful of the environment as well as social and wage conditions. The majority of cultivated plants are stamped with the BIO label.
Another untruth related in the report, the nurseries of the canton of Geneva would not care to cultivate plants adapted to the future climate. A false statement again, since the Geneva nurseries have anticipated these questions to respond to global warming for many years and have changed the species grown to meet the needs of tomorrow.
Serious and qualitative solutions therefore exist on our territory. They reflect the commitment of local entrepreneurs to virtuous practices in terms of the environment and sustainability. We invite both administrations and individuals to come and discover trees and shrubs grown in these nurseries.
Vincent Compagnon, president of the Association Jardin Suisse Genève, and Aude Jacquet Patry, member of the committee and director of Jacquet SA
