Lockheed Martin is nearing completion of the Extended Ranger (ER) Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) precision-guided munition. The company reported a successful trial of the ammunition.

What we know

The GMLRS is a family of 227 mm caliber guided rockets. They are used in the M142 HIMARS high mobility artillery rocket systems and the M270 MLRS multiple rocket launchers (and their modifications).

Conventional GMLRS has a maximum range of regarding 80 kilometers. The ER version can engage targets within a radius of 150 km. HIMARS and MLRS can fire a 6 and 12 round salvo respectively, although the caliber has been increased to 254mm.

Lockheed Martin conducted the first test of the ER GMLRS in March 2021, during which the projectile traveled 80 km. At the end of last year, a 59 km launch test was carried out. In recent tests, the M142 HIMARS system was able to launch the ER GMLRS to a maximum range of 150 km, nearly double the range of the GMLRS.
