Lollipop Chainsaw: the “so sexy” remake is officially announced!

The rumor stage is now over since, it’s official, a remake of Lollipop Chainsaw is now officially in development. Dragami Games will take care of this improved version. A message from the producer has even just been shared on social networks. Here it is, with many details relating to the project (such as the subject of licensed music or graphics), revealed.

Lollipop Chainsaw: some licensed music missing

« 14 years have passed since I started the Lollipop Chainsaw project. Lollipop Chainsaw was born out of Suda 51’s discussion about creating a new game with me. I saw great potential in the proposal of Grasshopper Manufacture [253 articles]” href=”https://www.gematsu.com/companies/netease-games/grasshopper-manufacture” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Grasshopper Manufacture, and just a month after Kadokawa Games was founded in April 2009, we started the development project on Lollipop Chainsaw, in May 2009. As Suda-san was very busy handling development on other projects at the time , I served as director and producer, creating a joint development team of staff from Grasshopper Manufacture and Kadokawa Games, directly overseeing development. Suda-san took on the game’s design and oversaw the project as executive producer.”

In January 2010, the help of a friend of mine working at Warner Bros. allowed us to successfully seize a chance with the validation committee of Warner Bros., and Warner Bros. thus becoming the publisher of the game in all regions outside of Asia. Additionally, a senior Warner Bros. suggested that we let director James Gunn rewrite the script for the game, which we gladly accepted. All this good fortune has made Lollipop Chainsaw, released in June 2012, loved by many gamers all over the world, selling more than one million units worldwide.

Unfortunately, various factors have made it impossible for fans to easily play Lollipop Chainsaw, and it has been some time since they have been able to access the game on current consoles. We, the original Lollipop Chainsaw development team, think the game is very valuable to us, and we didn’t want to leave it in limbo where players who want to play it can’t. As such, we purchased the intellectual property of Lollipop Chainsaw from Kadokawa Games and decided to develop a remake. We have already contacted Warner Bros. about development, and we are supported by them in this endeavour.

One thing we have to tell fans of the original game is that even though the original staff is working on the remake, there will be some different elements from the original. For example, the original game had 15 licensed songs used in the soundtrack, but unfortunately it’s difficult for us to implement them all this time around. As a result, apart from a few licensed tracks, the soundtrack will consist of new music. Also, as we have access to consoles with higher specs, we’ll be taking a more realistic approach to graphics this time around. Either way, our goal is to make it easy for gamers to play Lollipop Chainsaw. Please look forward to the 2023 game release. »
