Long Covid and ME/CFS: The Similarities and Underlying Biological Abnormalities

2023-06-11 22:03:01

Researchers have revealed that both “long Covid” and myalgic encephalomyelitis known as chronic fatigue syndrome affect the older parts of the brain with intriguing similarities. The researchers asked what biological abnormalities might be causing the symptoms, and whether these abnormalities were similar in the two diseases.

Researchers at Brigham and Harvard Medical School and the Mailman School of Public Health reviewed 559 scientific publications. The authors compared the symptoms of both conditions, noting that they were very similar, and then showed that similar underlying biological abnormalities were found in both conditions — abnormalities involving the brain, immune system, heart, lungs and intestines.
