Long-Term Effects of Premenopausal Ovary Removal: Informing Women’s Health Decisions

A new study shows that premenopausal women who undergo surgery to remove their ovaries and fallopian tubes may face chronic medical conditions and a decline in physical functioning. The research team welcomes these findings as they will help inform medical decisions to improve women’s health.

The study has been published in the Menopause magazine, points out that women with a history of premenopausal bilateral oophorectomy (PBO) with or without concurrent or previous hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), especially after age 46, have more chronic diseases in middle age compared to their referents. The ovaries can be removed for several reasons, including cysts and endometriosis, a condition caused by the growth of uterine cells in other parts of the body. Women who test positive for a certain BRCA gene mutation (which increases the risk of cancer) may choose to have them removed to prevent ovarian cancer as reported Upinews.

The study involved 24 women who had a PBO with or without a hysterectomy, and found that women who had a PBO between the ages of 46 and 49 had a higher risk of arthritis and obstructive sleep apnea. While women who had the procedure before age 46 had a higher risk of arthritis, asthma, obstructive sleep apnea and bone fractures. The research team clarifies that the ovaries produce most of a woman’s estrogen, which is key to regulating the menstrual cycle and affects the urinary tract, heart and blood vessels, bones, breasts, skin, hair , mucous membranes, pelvic muscles and the brain. Which shows how important estrogen is for people. In contrast, the new study found no significant age-related differences in cognitive status after PBO surgery.

The new findings will be key to improving the basis for these types of medical decisions, by offering evidence that can help make more accurate decisions that contribute to developing women’s health.
