London: Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II (96) has surpassed the record set by Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej (88), the second longest-serving monarch in the world after Louis XIV of France.
Between 1927 and 2016, the Thai king sat on the throne for 70 years and 126 days. This record was surpassed by Queen Elizabeth, who was celebrating her 70th year in office. Louis XIV, who ruled France from 1643 to 1715, was the longest reigning monarch in the world.
In September 2015, Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne, surpassing her grandmother, Queen Victoria, to become Britain’s longest-serving monarch.
