The Game Awards 2022 will not be held for several months. However, Horizon Forbidden West already offers the title of best game of the year. How is it possible ? It’s not about bribery. The prestigious title was bestowed upon it at another, admittedly less prestigious, but no less important conference, Develop:Brighton. The event also crowned other video games and studios in different categories.
The best video game of the year
Each year, the Develop:Brighton conference is on the agenda of all gaming professionals in Europe. The conference brings together studios and developers from the old continent. This is an opportunity for all the participants to organize a small ceremony in the style Game Awards. Video games and studios that have marked the past year are nominated in several categories. The winners are announced with great fanfare.
Since the ceremony takes place halfway through the year, the video games nominated are those released during the second half of 2021 and the first quarter of 2022. Admittedly, these titles do not equal the prestige of the Game Awards. Nevertheless, they occupy a prominent place in the landscape of video games and allow titles and developers to stand out with the recognition of professionals.
This year, it is Horizon : Forbidden West which achieved supreme recognition by being named the best video game of the year. Guerilla Games’ action-RPG was up against other big blockbusters like Forza Horizon 5Deathloop or even Ratchet & Clank : Rift ApartSifu and Life is Strange : True Colors. The title is well deserved given the critical and commercial success that the title has garnered since its release last February. By the way, Aloy also came home with the title of “Best Visual Art”.
Resident Evil VR, Sumo Digital et plus encore
In the other categories, other titles that marked the year shone. This is the case of Marvel’s Guardians of The Galaxy which won the title of “best audio”. In the mobile games categories, the ultimate title went to Lego Star Wars Battles while Resident Evil 4 VR shone on the side of virtual reality video games. It managed to surpass other VR games that have made a lot of noise in the last 12 months, such as Sniper Elite VR and the sulphurous Hitman 3 VR. Life is Strange: True Colors is awarded the title of best storytelling.
As for developers, Sumo Digital was recognized as the best studio of the year while Curve Games won against all the publishers in the running. Find the full Develop:Brighton 2022 winners below.
