Los ‘vecinos’ del hantavirus viven en caravanas junto al puerto por la crisis de la vivienda en Canarias: “La vida está muy perra

The cruise ship MV Hondius is scheduled to dock at the Port of Ganadilla, arriving in close proximity to a permanent settlement consisting of approximately 20 caravans and roulottes.

The community, situated near the maritime infrastructure of Arrecife, is composed of residents who maintain stable employment but remain excluded from the local formal housing market. Despite their professional activity, the inhabitants of the settlement have established a semi-permanent existence in mobile homes due to the prohibitive costs of residential properties in the region.

Residents have stated that while they wish to transition to traditional housing, the current economic conditions make renting or purchasing a home impossible. This disparity is highlighted by the arrival of luxury expedition vessels like the MV Hondius, which brings high-spending tourists to the same port area where local workers reside in precarious conditions.

The housing shortage in the Canary Islands, and specifically in Lanzarote, has been driven by a combination of limited land availability and a surge in short-term holiday rentals. This market shift has pushed rental prices beyond the reach of many local employees, forcing some into unconventional living arrangements such as the Ganadilla settlement.

The settlement functions as a stable community rather than a transient camp, with inhabitants integrated into the local workforce. However, the lack of affordable housing options has created a structural barrier that prevents these workers from securing permanent residency in traditional buildings.

Local authorities and housing regulators have not provided a specific timeline for the implementation of affordable housing initiatives that would address the needs of workers currently living in non-traditional dwellings near the port.
