lots of gaming power in a tiny package

Acer presents a gaming PC with very full-bodied characteristics in an all-compact chassis.

The power of an ultra high-end PC in a volume of only 15L for 9 kg, this is the promise of the new Predator Orion X manufactured by Acer. An exceptional machine that seems very well thought out, even if some elements can make your teeth cringe.

GeForce RTX 4090 and 13th Gen Intel Core

The promise of power will undoubtedly be fulfilled. In its small volume, the Orion X indeed houses an Intel Core i9-13900KS processor with 150W of TDP, supported by an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 liquid-cooled graphics card. Acer promises that the processor will be able to reach a record frequency of 6 GHz, not bad. There will also be 32 GB of DDR5-5600 RAM and an SSD up to 1 TB in NVMe format.

The first gnashing of teeth comes when we look at the graphics card. This is a Founder Edition from Nvidia on which Acer has removed the cooling system to stick its proprietary system on it. We therefore wonder if it will really be possible to modify this part on our own, when the other graphics card brands do not offer models adapted to this compact format, by Acer’s own admission.

However, the Orion X seems to be teeming with good ideas.

An accessible modification system.

To allow players to upgrade the machine and modify the components, Acer has provided a fairly easy-to-access modular design for its machine.

From the facade, there is easy access to levers that unlock access to clearly identified areas. Thus zone 1 provides access to the processor, SSD and power supply, while zone 2 focuses on the graphics card and 2.5-inch slots.

Lower and still on the front, Acer offers a few ports: two 3.5 mm jacks for headphones and microphone, a USB 3.0 port and a USB-C port. Above, an originality: an easily removable and installable SSD in the machine (hot swap). It connects via USB-C and can therefore be used as an external SSD with other devices.

Launch in September

Acer’s Predator Orion X (POX-650) will be launched in Europe from September 2023. The recommended price is announced at 2,499 euros without specifying the on-board configuration at this price. The GeForce RTX 4090 being offered alone at 1,949 euros by Nvidia, we suspect that the price of 2,499 euros does not cover this price.
