The Philippine motorcycling community is reeling after a tragic incident at a motorcycle exhibition along Marilaque road in Tanay, Rizal, claimed the life of a popular vlogger known as John Louie Arguelles. On Sunday, Arguelles lost his life while performing a “Superman” stunt with another rider, resulting in a collision that left him fatally injured. Video footage of the accident quickly spread across social media, prompting both outrage and calls for stricter regulations surrounding these exhibitions.
“We will run after you wherever you are. Your action caused the death of someone,” declared Vigor Mendoza II, head of the Land Transportation Office (LTO). Mendoza announced that criminal charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide would be filed against the organizers of the event.
The surviving rider is also facing criminal charges in connection with the incident and has received a show-cause order from the LTO, demanding an explanation as to why his license should not be revoked. Mendoza issued a stark warning to all LTO district directors:
“This is an eye-opener for me as this is being done every weekend. If this is happening every weekend without your knowledge, there is something wrong with your management,”
he stated, emphasizing the need for greater vigilance and proactive enforcement.
The LTO has taken swift action, instructing its Calabarzon chief, Elmer Decena, to collaborate with the police and local authorities to prevent Marilaque Highway from becoming a recurring site for motorcycle exhibition events. Mendoza stressed that any future incidents would be met with the one-strike policy, demanding immediate action to avert further tragedies.
“We are always reactive. If there are reports on social media, that’s only when we act. You should prevent this from happening again. When will we act, when the next victim comes along?” he questioned, underscoring the urgency of addressing the issue before another life is lost.
In response to this tragic event, the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) has increased its presence along the Marilaque Highway, deploying officers from Laguna, cavite, and Quezon to curb reckless behavior and ensure public safety.
