Lucha Villa dies at the age of 86

Mexico. – The singer Lucha Villa, retired from the public eye since 1997 and one of the most outstanding artists of the ranchero genre, died this day at the age of 86.

Luz Elena Ruiz Bejarano, who was born in Camargo, Chihuahua in 1936, developed a successful career in both norteño and ranchera music as well as in country-style cinema, becoming an icon of Mexicanness.

However, the also nicknamed “big girl from Camargo”, saw her career slow down when in the summer of 1997 she underwent a failed cosmetic intervention, which ended in a coma for two weeks and left her with irreversible sequelae that kept her away from the stages.
