A miracle is needed, Ludovic Magnin (43) said two weeks ago. A miracle that would save SCR Altach from relegation from the Austrian Bundesliga.
Now that’s exactly what happened: The club miraculously secured a place in the top flight right behind the Swiss border. Magnin’s team won the last game in the so-called qualifying group against the already rescued WSG Tirol 2-1 in front of over 8000 spectators. That’s enough, because at the same time Admira Wacker blundered and thus had to start the bitter descent.
Actually already written off
In recent weeks, hardly anyone believed that Altach could still avoid relegation. With two games to go, Magnins SCR Altach were four points behind. Admira Wacker even had a five-point cushion on the relegation zone.
Then the turning point: Altach defeated Admira 3-0 in a direct duel. And now the unbelievable detachment at the end of the table.
“We knew that this mode would suit us”
“What the guys have done in the last three or four laps is unbelievable. I’m incredibly proud of the team and I’m glad I fulfilled the mission that was entrusted to me in January,” says Magnin, who only took over Altach in January, in an interview shortly after the saving final whistle to “Sky Sport Austria”. “We knew that this mode would suit us when we deliver.”
What Magnin means by that: In Austria, the teams are divided into a championship group and a qualification group after 22 match days. In addition, each team’s points are halved. For Altach, this had the positive effect that the gap to a non-relegation zone was significantly reduced in one fell swoop – and relegation was still possible despite a completely botched regular season.
Bad news for Lausanne Sport
And with Ludovic Magnin on the sidelines, the outsider actually grabbed his chance.
One should have less joy in the Altach rescue in Lausanne. There, Ludovic Magnin should be at the top of the wish list for the new coach. It is rather unlikely that “Ludo” would switch to the Swiss relegation team after the spectacular relegation.
