Lufthansa ground staff strike for pay rise amid inflation

AA / Berlin

Lufthansa canceled more than 1,000 flights on Wednesday due to a strike by the airline’s ground staff over the current pay dispute.

The one-day strike, which began at 03:45 local time (01:45 GMT), forced the German airline to cancel almost all flights from Frankfurt and Munich airports.

Major disruptions and flight delays were also expected at Berlin, Cologne/Bonn and Düsseldorf airports, further compounding the chaos affecting travel during the peak summer holiday season.

More than 134,000 passengers will be penalized by flight cancellations, according to Lufthansa.

The Verdi union is demanding a 9.5% wage increase to help employees cope with inflation in Germany.

The next round of wage negotiations is expected to take place in Frankfurt next week.
