Lyon give up Boss and use Blanc’s services on a two-year contract

Lyon (AFP) – The French football club Lyon abandoned the services of Dutch coach Peter Bos and used the 1998 World Cup champion and former France coach Laurent Blanc to supervise his technical management with a two-season contract, according to what was announced on Sunday.

In a club that has been searching for three years to restore its level and is moving towards officially transferring its ownership to American businessman John Textor, Friday’s draw against Toulouse came 1-1 in the local league after a series of four consecutive defeats, ending Boss’s career with the team that took over supervision in May May 2021.

“Given the disappointing results we achieved at the start of the season, which fall far short of expectations and set goals, Olympique Lyonnais have decided to temporarily suspend Peter Boss,” Lyon said in a statement on Sunday.

“After the exchange (communications) during the night of Saturday-Sunday with John Textor, Olympique Lyonnais announces that it has taken a decision to appoint Laurent Blanc as the head coach of the professional team for a period of two seasons, that is, until June 30, 2024.”

More than a year after taking over the team coach, Boss failed to make his mark, so Lyon finished last season eighth and thus missed the continental participation, and then started the current season well by obtaining 13 points out of 15 possible before his results declined by receiving four consecutive defeats and then a draw Friday.

The 58-year-old Dutchman found himself in a confrontation with his players, especially the captain returning to the team, Alexandre Lacazette, who publicly questioned the tactical options of the former coach of Ajax Amsterdam, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen on Friday evening.

In order to try to revive the team, Lyon decided to use Blanc, the coach of the France national team between 2010 and 2012, who had been without a job since his dismissal from the Qatari Rayyan coach last February.

The 56-year-old returns to training in his country for the first time since his departure from Paris Saint-Germain in June 2016 after he had coached him since 2013 in his second experience in “Ligue 1” after Bordeaux (2007-2010).
