At around 14:44 on Thursday, March 31, Japan time, there was a large-scale earthquake overseas. The epicenter is in the South Pacific (southeast of the Royality Islands), and the magnitude of the earthquake is estimated to be 7.2.
* The epicenter is from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC).
According to PTWC, there is a possibility of a tsunami.
(postscript)
The Japan Meteorological Agency also released information on teleseism at 15:11. There is no impact of the tsunami on Japan due to this earthquake.
There was a M7.0 earthquake near this epicenter at around 5:57 this morning, and sea level fluctuations of up to 7 cm were observed in New Caledonia.
Is it a tremor of about “seismic intensity 3 in Japan” near the epicenter?
According to the United States Geological Survey National Earthquake Information Center (USGS, NEIC), there seems to have been a maximum of magnitude IV tremor in the revised Mercalli Intensity Class near the epicenter.
Although it is not possible to make a strict comparison, it seems to be a tremor equivalent to a seismic intensity of about 3 when converted to the Japan Meteorological Agency seismic intensity class.
