Apple just introduced the new 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops at the Apple Unleashed event. Both based on the new M1 Max and M1 Pro chips, they have more in common than previous MacBook iterations between them, but also have their fair share of differences.
The 14-inch MacBook Pro makes its entry into the catalog while the 16-inch model is an update to the existing MacBook Pro, but Apple has made enough changes (format, design, connectivity, screen) to speak of real novelty. Both are worthy of being among the best MacBooks of the moment and surely a choice found for the creative ones. photo and video. The question is, which one to choose?

14-inch MacBook Pro vs 16-inch MacBook Pro: Design
While Apple was content to put an M1 chip in the 13-inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro last year, this time, we are entitled to a little more. The design of these new MacBook Pro 14 and 16 has been revised, with a new aluminum chassis with a square silhouette and flat edges that is very reminiscent of the first MacBook Pro unibody (2006). Both available in Silver and Space Gray, their only apparent difference lies in the format with 15,5 mm thick for 1,6 kg on the 14 inch and 16,8 mm for 2,1 kg on the 16 inch.
14-inch MacBook Pro vs 16-inch MacBook Pro: Display
We remain on a notion of format with the screen which is obviously the obvious distinctive element between the MBP 14 and the MBP 16. We are dealing on one side with a panel of 14.2 inches (3024 x 1964 pixels, 254 ppi) and on the other to a screen of 16.2 inches (3456 x 2244 pixels, 254 ppi). Both are Liquid Retina XDR mini-LEDs with 120Hz refresh, up to 1600 nits brightness, True Tone, and DCI-P3 color spectrum support. Note also the new design borderless of the screen which reveals a notch “notch” – as disparaged as on iPhone – to accommodate the 1080p webcam and Apple sensors (not Face ID unfortunately).
14-inch MacBook Pro vs 16-inch MacBook Pro: Battery life
Induced again by the size of the chassis, the battery of two ultrabooks does not have the same capacity. On the one hand, the 14-inch has a 70 Wh lithium-polymer battery while the 16-inch can count on a 100 Wh lithium-polymer battery. Thus, these two laptops should benefit from a good endurance. Apple announces 17 hours video playback for the 14-inch model and no less than 21 hours for the 16 inch model.
Good to know: Although these two newer MacBook Pros are compatible with fast charging (Apple promises up to 50% power in 30 minutes), this requires the 96W power adapter which is not included on the 14 inch. basic, comes with a 67W power adapter. If you are considering this model but want the fast charging function, you can optionally upgrade your MacBook Pro chip to an M1 Pro (10 cores) and Apple will provide you with the most powerful charger, or spend 85 € to buy the 96W charger separately.
14-inch MacBook Pro vs 16-inch MacBook Pro: which one to choose?
You will have noticed that the new MacBook Pros have a lot in common, but there are a few things that you should consider before deciding on your purchase. Unlike the differences between a MacBook Air and a Pro, your decision this time is going to be limited to screen size, body measurements, and battery life. From a portability perspective, the 14-inch MacBook is recommended for users on the go, while the 16-inch variant is more suitable for those with a working setup. Indeed, with more than 2 kg on the scale, the MBP 16 has taken a certain overweight.
With so few material differences, it’s finally the price which may play the biggest role in your choice, with a difference of 500 euros anyway between the two models (starting price): from 2249 euros for MBP 14 and from 2749 euros for the MBP 16.
All things considered, the new MacBook Pros have evolved in the right direction on this 2021 generation. Faced with increasingly threatening competitors, in particular Microsoft with its latest Surface Laptop Studio or the ever-great Dell XPS, Apple did the right thing by giving the pros everything they wanted including the MagSafe charging cable, more ports, a redesigned keyboard with function keys instead of ‘a touch bar and a borderless screen with high refresh rate. Apple’s new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips also look very promising, but that we can measure in a test very soon …
